The official drug testing procedures are based on those established by the Department of Health and Human Services. These procedures include: urine sample collection, laboratory procedures, and reporting and recordkeeping of final results. Only laboratories certified by Health and Human Services under the National Laboratory Certification Program (NLCP) may be used. These procedures exist to safeguard accuracy and to protect the privacy of drivers.

The Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 requires drug and alcohol testing of safety-sensitive transportation employees in aviation, trucking, railroads, mass transit, pipelines and other transportation industries.

Why does the collector stand outside the bathroom door during collection?

A. Once the collection process has begun, the collector is mandated to oversee the entire collection process. Immediately after receiving the sample, the collector must test for temperature, color and potential signs of adulteration.

Is there a time limit on how long I can be in the collection area?

A. The DOT prefers that the collection process take only two minutes or less.
