Employers who operate drug-free workplaces experience fewer workplace accidents, improved productivity and reduced costs. To promote these safer, more efficient workplaces, the US Department of Labor sponsors National Drug-Free Work Week (October 19th thru 25th). This annual campaign is the ideal time to strive toward the ideal of a drug-free work environment. Thousands of employers nationwide observe Drug-Free Work Week, now in its third year of operation. What is Drug Free Work Week For?Take advantage of this designated time to implement a new Drug-Free Workplace program or promote an existing DFWP strategy. This is also an ideal time to train supervisors and employees on the signs and effects of workplace drug use. Employees should also be reminded at this time of any existing Employee Assistance Programs or community treatment resources available through substance abuse treatment centers, hospitals, or other programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous. The DOL also suggests holding a social event with food, fun, and non-alcoholic beverages to reinforce the idea that drugs and alcohol are not required to unwind, relax, and have a good time. Drug Use in the Workplace Statistics75% of the nation's current illegal drug users employed-and 3.1% say they have used drugs before or during work hours. American businesses lose approximately $81 billion each year due to lost productivity from drug and alcohol abuse. Employed drug users are more likely to be involved in a workplace accident, file a worker's compensation claim, request early dismissal, have extended absences, and be late for work. Employer ResourcesTo help employers promote and encourage this event, the DOL offers several resources, including brochures, fact sheets and sample press release content. You can find these tools at http://www.dol.gov/asp/programs/drugs/workingpartners/dfww-toolbox.htm. It is the hope of the DOL and ARCpoint of the Las Vegas Valley area that employers will strive to make every week a Drug-Free Work Week.
